Old English Alcoholic Liqueur.

Crafted from a secret blend of herbs and spices and island forest ingredients rum smugglers in 1600s would drop their illicit barrels offshore to avoid being caught by the authorities.

The barrels would be retrieved later when the coast was clear but often the rum would have been tainted by seawater - the fruity, sweet and spicy flavours of shrub helped mask the taste.

Today shrub is enjoyed as a mixer to create traditional Cornish ’Rum and Shrub’ produced by St Martins Vineyard, Isles of Scilly.
